To save on energy, cost, and resources, don’t plant more of a crop in your garden than you are able to use. If you’re not planning on selling your crops at a market, planting more than you can use will just end up wasting resources and space in your garden. If you have extra space, look into planting a variety of crops instead.Use your tool handles as rulers in the garden. Tools that have long handles such as rakes, hoes and shovels can be used in place of a measuring stick. Place the handles on the ground and measure them. Paying close attention to the measurements, use a black marker to establish each interval along the handle’s side in a clearly visible manner. Now, the next time you do work in the garden, you’ll actually have a ruler at your fingertips.
When the vegetable season is over, grow a shoulder season crop if possible. Fruits like strawberries or raspberries bear fruit very early or very late in the season before or after the summer vegetable crops take over and can be planted. Raspberries can be planted to bear fruit in the fall and strawberries can be planted to bear fruit in the spring.
Gardening is a pastime that really gives back. It brings benefits to ourselves, to our family, and to our planet. So, turn your thoughts to outside, and to the pleasure to be had by tending our own piece of the earth, and work on that garden!
